The Job Interview

You have answered an advertisement or sent in a spontaneous application. The enterprise has invited you for a recruitment interview, the last step before you get the job. Interviews involve psycho-technical or general knowledge tests.

There is no model interview. There are almost as many types of interviews as there are enterprises. Furthermore, an interview is often much more a meeting. It is the final exam you must pass to get the job. You must prepare for it very carefully.

So what then is an interview?
• A show case for presenting your Talents and Skills.
• A judgment of your appearance, qualifications and general fitness for the job.
• An opportunity to convince the employer you can make significant growth contributions.
• A chance to appraise the job, the employer and job environment.
• Enables you decide if the job meets your career needs and interests, and if the employer fits your requirements.

An interview has three phases, before the interview, during the interview and after the interview, and each phase requires different approaches and attitudes.

Before:
• Dressing. (Wear clothes that reflect the nature and standard of the job you are seeking)
• Be on time. (Show up 15 – 30 minutes before)
• Find out in advance how much time it takes to get to the place of interview
• Have general information about the enterprise
• Relax (Do not smoke, chew gum, or fidget)
• Pray for confidence and inspiration to respond to questions
• Be in possession of all the originals of your academic and employment documents and other certificates (If requested)

During:
• First impressions always count, be conscious
• Proper attire and punctuality puts the employer in a positive frame of mind
• Introduce yourself properly
• Wait for the employer to offer his hand
• Wait to be offered a seat and sit up
• Do not place your documents on the employer’s table.
• Master you CV (Questions will be focused on it to establish a link between your accomplishments and the position)

Pay attention to the non-verbal signs shown by your prospective employer. Non verbal signs speak a lot about your performance and if the Recruiter loves you. If your interview reaches the 45 Minute stretch, then know you are doing good, above one hour, you did great. It is not easy to maintain interaction with a recruiter for more than 30 minutes given that if you were not suitable, they would try to end the interview as quickly as possible.

Have questions ready. Your questions should be meaningful and be oriented towards the employers dispositions and vision related to the position you applied for. Two or three meaningful questions is ok.

If asked for a remark, make sure you have a solid remark to make as per the interview. Your remark could be centered on the interview process, the environment, your reception or any other thing that struck you

After:
• In case you receive no feedback after the agreed date, you may contact the agency for information.
• Do not harass, be polite going about it.
• Send brief thank you letters
• Discuss salary issues, office hours, and social advantages only after you have been offered the job and you are now at the pre-contracting stage.

    Quite an original way of presenting what is often thought of interviews. I hope to make use of this during my next interview.
