32 and Counting…

Profile_Pic_2012It’s my birthday; I am 32 (getting better, not older). I am elated. I received many messages YOU all sent and my slight regret is in not being able to thank everybody personally.

Today, I choose to share with you my birthday wish. I wish for a Cameroon where Cameroonians focus on what unites and not what divides. Where we do what is right and not what is convenient. A country where collective interests are prime over individual interests

This I cannot accomplish alone, but I can solicit your assistance because as you all expressed your desire to see me happy, this is what shall make me happy. Join me and together we shall inspire Cameroonians to bring about positive change. Join me and we shall engage in a tireless effort to ensure there is social justice in our neighborhoods, communities and businesses. Join me and we shall ensure the 50 years ahead are better than the 50 years passed. Let’s make this our reason for living.

Let’s rally like-minded people and encourage them to challenge the status-quo irrespective of where they are. Let’s inspire many more people all over that the world; that change happens because people like us make it happen. Let’s be responsible enough so that our countrymen can trust us with their hopes and aspirations. Let’s tell our children that henceforth we are resolving to lay a solid platform for them to crawl, walk, run and fly. This mission of ours is not political, if anything we are non-partisan, it is about a cultural change, a change in mentality of the people. It is a simple idea which says – I am Cameroon, you are Cameroon, we are Cameroon, we are responsible to provide solutions to the challenges of our beloved country.

I remain grateful to you for your encouragements, mentoring and affection. I resolve to accomplish, if not take this mission to greater heights and for this, I will need the “many more years” you wished me.



Inspirational Talks With…

Last Friday, my friends from @Cameroon Ô’Bosso invited me to lead an inspirational discussion with 30 young people, on how being self disciplined leads to success. Pondering on the subject, I asked myself if I was a suitable pick for such an arguably sensitive theme.

Firstly, I resist the thoughts of considering myself a successful person. To me, I am still leaping towards success. Secondly, success is relative. There is no universally accepted measure for success. Everybody determines what success is. It may be related to having a great job, forming and developing a family, engaging in philanthropy etc.

Whatever success is to you, it is important to know how to get there. As my young friends honored me by listening, I made them understand we all were in the quest for success. It starts with us knowing what we want to do, knowing our “life desired outcome” and accomplishing the tasks that will get us there. Once this is done, all what we need to do is work hard and be self-disciplined.

In closing, they understood that they were the leaders, the legislators and auditors of their lives. Respecting the principles, values and processes they have identified, necessary to get them to desired success remains above all a matter of choice.

As you start your week, choose to succeed by working hard and staying disciplined. This should apply with what you want to realize today, this week, month, year as well as in your lives. Awesome week Y’all!

Training 1: Effective Meetings

Innovations in the field of information technology changed the way people interact and communicate. A century ago we still had to meet face-to-face to communicate and only a few decades ago new ways of communicating without meeting were introduced but in some cases, human interaction is still necessary to communicate effectively. It is part of the human nature to meet other humans for many reasons and at the local level of JCI, meetings still have a great impact in decision-making and sharing experiences, but times have changed and we need to rethink the way we conduct meetings at the local level.

What this course proposes is that JCI Local Organizations must be creative when organizing meetings. Because each Local Organization is different and every year can be different, local officers must decide what type of meeting is more effective for the members and the organization. While in one hand humans have a need to meet person-to-person, in the other hand, innovations have proven that there are other ways of achieving the same results.





Training 2: Effective Communications

Being able to communicate effectively is the most important of all life skills. Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to another. How well this information can be transmitted and received is a measure of how good our communication skills are. Developing your communication skills can help all aspects of your life, from your professional life to social gatherings and everything in between.

The ability to communicate information accurately, clearly and as intended, is a vital life skill and something that should not be overlooked. It’s never too late to work on your communication skills and by doing so improve your quality of life.


Solving Community Challenges depend on us!

I attended the first National General Assembly of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Cameroon this past weekend in Bamenda, my home city. The general assembly is a forum where JCI members meet, report on local activities, benefit from training opportunities, socialize and above all do something positive in the community that hosts them.

Invited to Bamenda in two capacities, first as main Trainer for the JCI Impact training and then to present I am Cameroon, the movement that engages Cameroonians to accept responsibility for the future of Cameroon. I was fired-up for a hectic Saturday.


JCI Impact is a half day training course that teaches JCI members, through Community Needs Analysis to identify community challenges and provide sustainable solutions. I had eight participants who resolved to lead a forum to collect data and propose sustainable solutions to Cameroon’s number one problem, corruption. They planned to involve the JCI Cameroon National board and push that it becomes a National JCI flagship project that will run in every local organization. This idea stemmed from the fat that during the training, I mentioned that in more than two decades of our existence in Cameroon, JCI Cameroon had nothing to lay claim as something positive influenced by the organization. It got members thinking and it is an obvious reality. A reality that pushes us to change the next couple of decades.

Later that day, I granted a 40-minute interview to RUSH FM accompanied by Takor Takor and Marius Siewe, members of JCI Cameroon and Champions of I am Cameroon. The host Mr. Fozo had pertinent questions about I am Cameroon, the movement, its philosophy, its network, conditions for membership, how it is financed and the upcoming plans. The interview was exciting given that it was done at a restaurant were ordinary citizens who came to have launch had the chance of following us live and off-air. Consequently, we enrolled two supporters who promised to help the National I am Cameroon Committee organize the official launching in Bamenda next month.

That evening, I presented I am Cameroon to JCI Members. Prior to my presentation, JCI members had been treated with a video showing images of illustrious world personalities like Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. And each time these pictures were displayed I observed them released happy roars as if to praise the greatness of these individuals.


I started by asking members to reflect on my observation. I Said “I noticed you clapped when the images of Mandela, Martin Luther and Gandhi were displayed”, they confirmed, I continued “Ask yourselves, will my displayed image someday raise as much euphoria?” The room went silent but a few courageous members said “yes” and then I told them I am Cameroon was inspired by an observation that more than 50 years after independence, the dreams of the founders were eluding Cameroonians. I told them, we were done waiting for someone else to fix our future and that we are taking ownership of our country. We know that nothing will change until we change ourselves. And lastly, that I Am Cameroon is a movement of citizens who believe in creating a better future for Cameroon by taking ownership and taking action. Finally that I am Cameroon gave them the chance to create as much euphoria. They marveled.

I called on them to support the movement and take action because as complicated as it may seem, the change we seek depends on us and it starts with us. I was referred to as “I am Cameroon” the rest of that night. I marveled as well!

How I Market Myself!

In my last article, I related people to products. Like products, people too need to sell themselves, share their skills and competencies and communicate what they stand for, what they represent, in-short, who they are.

 Today, I share with you in simple tips what I do to market myself. If these tips have worked for me (as a teenager, I was very timid, clumsy and shy) in getting a job, developing personally and improving on my social power, it is my conviction they shall certainly work for you.

To standout, you must be outstanding. This means you must do things differently. You must go out of your way to get noticed. This is what I have done!

 I have developed a Clear and Concise Message: I Created a 30 to 60-second statement that clearly explains what I do, and what I stand for and how it provides a solution to the market. I have made this message my mission statement and raison d’être. I Practice it daily and share with my targeted audience and trust me, they react to it.

 I have joined Networking Groups: I meet and discuss with important people on weekly basis; if I had to meet these same people in their offices, I would have less time to expatiate on my clear message. Meeting them at these networking events enables me explain in detail what I do, how it helps and how they can benefit.  Networking events are solid platforms to share your competencies and skills and build your social power. Engage with the people you meet and have collateral material you can share. So find out about local networking events in your community and join them, a year from today you would have learned a lot and probably nailed that job or that contract.

 I have created Collateral Material: My approach is made practical by the gadgets I use. I wear lapel pins that attract people to find out what these lapel pins stand for. I have business cards for all my business interests which I willingly share. I have short write-ups that I hand out to people who may not be able to give me the discussion time I would love to have. I keep these gadgets simple and attractive and am always ready to draw them out and or talk about what they represent.

 I focus on my Core Competencies: I am aware of my skills and competencies. I am realistic about what I can do, and what I cannot do I do not venture to explore especially when at an interview or when networking with industry leaders and risers. I know my target market for every business venture I undertake. I avoid spending time trying to meet people who do not fit within my areas of competence.

 I have developed Alliance Partners: I have formed strategic partnerships with others who are in the same field as I. These alliances can be as simple as sharing contacts and leads, or they might take on a more formal structure. Either way, the goal is to broaden your reach beyond your own network.

 I am in the process of becoming an Industry Leader: I have noticed that people like to listen to subject matter experts. Therefore, I look for opportunities to share my skills and talents by writing articles, participating in TV and Radio debates or lecturing on a topic within my area of expertise. I deliver courses at local and community level that give me exposure, which to me is the greatest reward.

I effectively use Social media: Many of us don’t yet know the power of social media as a personal marketing tool. We all have Facebook, Twitter etc. accounts but use them for the fun of it and not for sales purposes. Social media is my virtual sales person. I share my ideas and thoughts on my blog at I have an “All-Star” Profile Strength on LinkedIn which I use to connect with People and sell my skills. I encourage my contacts to endorse me, that way; my skills are further exposed to potential recruiters. I follow groups and companies that are suitable for my career development and business interests. I use Twitter @MungaiNfi where I share my tweets. Tweets are instant messages of what happening in your circle. I use Google+ and Facebook for the same reasons, I share my thoughts and pictures of my events, I create groups and pages and events which are published free and reach everyone in my network. I love pictures, they tell my story so I use Pinterest and Instagram for these. Reading this, you may think I spend my time on social sites. Actually, there is an option to link all your social sites such that when you publish a post on one, it appears on the rest. That is what I have done, and that is why I am present socially. Thus when I post on my blog, it appears on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+, the pictures I post are linked to the same sites as well as Pinterest and Instagram.

Now you know what I do, try doing the same and even more. You can be different and develop better ways of doing what I do. For me, it’s working.
